Our contact details
KickStartYou is run by Toluwani Sangosanya, who is responsible for how your personal information is used.
Email: toluwani@kickstartyou.org
The information we collect
We collect the following information when you give it to us:
- Your first name and email address
- Whether you are an international student
- Whether you identify as Black (you may choose "Prefer not to say")
- Your current stage of study
- Any further details you choose to share, such as the sectors and roles you are interested in, your city, your home country, your university, the challenges you face and how you heard about us
- Which options you choose in our newsletter polls
How we use it
We use your information to:
- Send you The Weekly Kick, our weekly newsletter
- Understand who we are reaching, so we can improve our roles tracker, newsletter and website
- Shape future services around what our community needs
Our lawful basis
We only use your information with your consent. You give it when you sign up or answer our questions.
Information about whether you identify as Black is ethnic origin data, which the law treats as a special category of personal data. We only collect it with your explicit consent, and you can always choose "Prefer not to say".
You can withdraw your consent at any time by unsubscribing from any of our emails or by contacting us. This does not affect anything we did with your information before you withdrew it.
How long we keep it
We keep your information for as long as you are subscribed. If you unsubscribe, we delete your details within 12 months. We may keep a record of your email address only to make sure you are not sent emails again.
Who else handles it
We use trusted services to run KickStartYou. They only process your information on our behalf:
- Brevo: sends The Weekly Kick and stores subscriber details
- Google: Google Analytics, which counts visits and clicks on our website (only if you accept cookies)
- Microsoft: Microsoft Clarity, which shows how people use our website (only if you accept cookies), and Microsoft Forms and OneDrive, which hold answers from our earlier sign-up form
- GitHub: hosts our website
Some of these services may store information outside the UK. Where they do, they use safeguards approved under UK data protection law.
Sharing your information
We will never sell your personal information.
In the future, we may share overall figures about our community with partners, for example "most of our readers are in their final year". These figures never include your name, email address or anything else that could identify you.
We may also share information if the law requires us to.
Newsletter polls
When you choose an option in one of our newsletter polls, Brevo records which option you chose. We use this to understand what our readers need. We only report poll results as totals.
Cookies
Our website only uses cookies if you accept them. You can read more in our Cookie policy.
Keeping your information safe
We use trusted services with strong security, and only Toluwani has access to your personal information.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law, you have the right to:
- Ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you
- Ask us to correct information that is wrong or incomplete
- Ask us to delete your information
- Ask us to limit how we use your information
- Object to how we use your information
- Ask for your information in a format you can take to another organisation
- Withdraw your consent at any time
You do not have to pay to use these rights. To make a request, email toluwani@kickstartyou.org.
How to complain
If you are unhappy with how we have used your information, please contact us first at toluwani@kickstartyou.org and we will do our best to put it right.
You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK's data protection regulator, at ico.org.uk.
